The Appalachian Trail is just a stone’s throw away.  The Jefferson National Forest features tumbling waterfalls, rare wildflowers and plenty of outdoor recreation, including canoeing, kayaking, hiking, biking, fishing, camping, horseback riding and picnicking.  Nearby Big Walker Lookout and National Scenic Byway show off the best of the Appalachian Mountains.  The byway, one of only three in Virginia, passes through 16 miles of some of the most scenic land in the Eastern U.S.  The Lookout has a 100-foot observation tower, an old-fashioned foot bridge, and nearby hiking trails.  The beautiful New River Trail State Park is Virginia’s longest linear park.  The long New River Trail parallels the New River for 39 miles, following an old railroad bed and providing a level surface for hikers, bicyclists and horseback riders.  The New River, one of a few North American rivers that flows north and the second oldest river in the world, provides rafting, canoeing, kayaking, and fishing.  Nearby, the 200-year-old Shot Tower was used to make ammunition by earlier settlers.  The area also has three golf courses, open year-around.
